Sicily’s Mount Etna, an active volcano, is one of the most exciting and fascinating viticultural areas in the world. Its wines, forged in primordial volcanic soils in high-elevation vineyards, possess striking elegance, minerality, and sense of place. To appropriately explore Etna, we’ll be using a “tour” format, different from our blind tastings: instead of each participant bringing a bottle, we will provide a curated selection of Etna wines, and ask participants to cover the cost with us. This allows us to explore a range of wines at different price points and to include some very limited-production, hard-to-find wines. Information about each wine will be shared to add context and depth, creating a more conversational, educational atmosphere—like taking a focused journey through the wineries of Mount Etna together. All money collected will be used to purchase the wines we’ll taste. Etna reds, primarily made from Nerello Mascalese, are often compared to Burgundy or Barolo for their bright acidity, fine tannins, and complex notes of red fruit, herbs, smoke, and earth, while the whites, typically from Carricante, are crisp and refreshing with citrus, saline, and mineral characteristics. The combination of intense sunlight, cool mountain temperatures, and diverse microclimates results in wines that are both powerful and refined, with a distinctive smoky, ashy nuance that reflects the active volcano beneath them. Together, we’ll slow down, savor each pour, and share our impressions as we move through the lineup. Whether you’re discovering Etna wines for the first time or deepening your appreciation, the evening is as much about connection and conversation as it is about what’s in the glass. It’s a chance to learn from one another, enjoy great company, and experience a remarkable wine region side by side.
