About

This premier Shenandoah National Park circuit delivers a wet, wild, and incredibly rugged mountain adventure. We will conquer steep gorges, scramble over boulders, and pass at least eight distinct waterfalls with multiple prime opportunities to cool off in legendary mountain swimming holes. **Phase 1: The Whiteoak Waterfall Parade** Starting from the boundary parking lot near Syria, Virginia, we cross a footbridge and push up the Whiteoak Canyon Trail. * **The Vibe:** High energy and awe-inspired. The path parallels a rushing mountain stream, climbing steadily past a spectacular series of lower falls. The sound of tumbling water fills the air, keeping our spirits high during a challenging single-file ascent over slick rocks and wooden steps. **Phase 2: Swimming at the Lower Falls** Before hitting the steepest climbs, the trail opens up to the stunning Lower Whiteoak Falls. * **The Swimming Hole:** Here, the stream drops into a wide, deep pool surrounded by flat rock ledges. It is the perfect spot for us to safely kick off our boots, change into swimwear, and plunge into the crisp, refreshing mountain water. **Phase 3: Lunch at the Upper Falls** About 2.5 miles in, after a steep push up the gorge, the trail brings us to the base of the massive 86-foot Upper Whiteoak Falls. The sheer cliffs and roaring curtain of water create an incredible amphitheater. The wide, rocky banks offer ample room for us to drop our packs, unpack lunch, and dry out in the sun after our morning swim. **Phase 4: Cruising the Fire Road Linkup** We turn onto the yellow-blazed Limberlost and Whiteoak Fire Roads to connect over to the next gorge. * **The Vibe:** Relaxed and chatty. This flatter, wider gravel section offers a much-needed mental break where we can walk two or three abreast before tackling the descent. **Phase 5: The Cliff Jump and Natural Slide on Cedar Run** The circuit finishes with a steep, technical descent down the Cedar Run Trail, saving the most adventurous water features for last. * **The Vibe:** Thrilling and highly focused. About a quarter of the way down the Cedar Run side, we'll reach a small, narrow gorge where the creek drops into a deep, shaded pool surrounded by large rock faces. This is the spot where we can leap right off the rock ledges into the deep water below. Just a bit further down, we will hit the famous **Cedar Run Natural Water Slide** to take turns launching down the smooth bedrock chute before finishing our trek back to the Cedar Run-Whiteoak Circuit Trailhead Click to open side panel for more information. ALLTRAILS MAP: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/virginia/white-oak-canyon-and-cedar-run-trail-loop?u=i&sh=y1w9cy BRING: Good Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes, trekking poles if you have them, plenty of water, snacks, and a lunch. PARKING/CARPOOLING/CARAVANING: Park at the **Whiteoak Canyon / Cedar Run Boundary Parking Area**, located at the end of Weakley Hollow Road (Route 600) near Syria, Virginia. We will gather at the Cedar Run-Whiteoak Circuit Trailhead Click to open side panel for more information kiosk, which is located right by the bridge next to the ranger station/ticket booth. There are vault toilets at the edge of the parking lot, making it the perfect assembly point to do a quick gear check and ensure everyone has their park pass or entry fee ready before we hit the trail. ### Important Parking Tips * **Arrive Early:** This is one of the most popular parking lots in the entire park. Because we are visiting during prime swimming season, the lot will easily fill up by 8:00 AM on weekends. * **Park Fees:** Since this trailhead sits at the bottom boundary of the park, there is an automated pay station/ranger booth right at the entrance. If you have an America the Beautiful interagency pass or a Shenandoah annual pass, make sure to bring it along to scan or show the ranger. * **Cell Service:** Cell signal drops to completely non-existent once you drive past Syria and head up into the hollow. Make sure everyone has the driving directions downloaded offline, and finish coordinating any carpools before you get close to the mountain! I encourage carpooling wherever possible. If you need a ride or want a ride, look at the list of attendees and where they live (it says in their profile). Then, for those who live near you, hit the "Chat" button to ask if they want or can offer a ride. Be sure you coordinate at least the day before with who you are riding with to ensure you are in sync. If you are a rider, please chip in towards gas (usually $5 - $20 depending on distance and # of riders). Additionally, you can post a request to give or receive a ride in the chat section of the event. POST EVENT DINNER, DRINKS, & SOCIALIZATION: We will stop to get dinner & drinks afterward at a place to be determined. Make sure whoever you ride with has the same plans as you so you can eat afterward if you want. EXPECTATIONS: Download the trail map onto your phone before you arrive. Bring plenty of drinking water and a lunch/snacks. Know your physical limits and cardiovascular fitness. Bring proper clothing and gear for the weather.
