About

Instructor Samantha Harmon Description Join this interactive workshop designed for library faculty and staff to build critical AI literacy and explore practical strategies for engaging with artificial intelligence in academic contexts. As AI tools increasingly shape how we search for information, conduct research, and support teaching and learning, developing thoughtful, ethical approaches to their use is essential. This session introduces a practical, non-technical approach to AI literacy grounded in real-world decision-making. Participants will explore how AI works (and its limitations), when it can be useful, and where caution is needed. Through guided activities and discussion, we’ll examine key issues such as bias, misinformation and disinformation, privacy and data use, environmental impact, and source verification. Participants will also explore the SKEPTICS framework, a practical tool for assessing how AI influences thinking, learning, and academic work. Together, we’ll apply it to library and instructional contexts and begin identifying ways to adapt it for services, instruction, and outreach. By the end of the session, participants will have a clear foundation for understanding AI and practical strategies for supporting critical, ethical engagement with AI across the libraries. Objectives Participants will Explain what AI is (and is not) and where it can be useful in library and academic contexts Critically evaluate AI-generated content for accuracy, bias, and misinformation Identify key ethical considerations, including privacy, data use, and environmental impact Apply the SKEPTICS framework to assess AI’s impact on learning and integrate it into library instruction and services Join the meeting This is a virtual workshop. The meeting link and password will be sent in the registration and reminder emails to all enrolled participants. The email will come from LibCal. a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
